In 1593 Grand Duke Ferdinando I \u2014 whose private Vasari Corridor runs right above the shops \u2014 decided he was tired of walking over the smell and evicted them, reserving the bridge for goldsmiths and jewelers. It doesn\u2019t mean every price on the bridge is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What the shops actually sell<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most storefronts fall into three groups. Traditional gold dealers sell 18-karat chains, bangles and wedding bands, often priced by weight plus workmanship; several families have held their shop for generations. A second group deals in watches and estate jewelry \u2014 vintage Rolexes, Art Deco brooches, signed pieces with provenance. The third sells contemporary designer jewelry and gemstones, from respectable to forgettable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two things to know about Italian gold. First, look for the stamp <strong>750<\/strong>, which means 18 karat \u2014 the Italian standard, warmer and deeper in color than the 14k common in the US. Second, every legitimate piece carries a maker\u2019s hallmark (a star, a number and a province code). Ask the jeweler to show you both under the loupe; a serious shop will do it without blinking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is buying on the Ponte Vecchio a good idea?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For gold chains and classic pieces sold by weight, prices on the bridge are surprisingly competitive \u2014 gold is a commodity, and these dealers turn over a lot of it. For signed vintage and estate pieces, the bridge shops are genuine specialists and the selection is hard to match. Where you pay the \u201cpostcard premium\u201d is on generic contemporary jewelry: a nondescript pendant costs more with the Arno in the background than it does three streets away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My rule for clients: buy on the bridge what the bridge is best at \u2014 gold by weight, estate pieces, watches from established dealers \u2014 and buy artisan work in the workshops. Come before 9, when the <em>madielle<\/em> are opening and the light comes down the river, or after dinner, when the windows glow and you can actually stand still in front of them.
