Solve those three and you can wear almost anything — Florentines themselves dress with polish but without fuss, and nobody expects a tourist in heels.

I work as a stylist and guide in this city, which means I spend my days walking clients across those cobblestones in every month of the year. This is the advice I actually give, season by season, plus the few things I’d genuinely leave at home.

The three rules that don’t change

Shoes first. Florence’s center is pietra serena — hard, uneven, occasionally slick stone. You’ll walk 15,000 steps without noticing. Wear shoes you’ve already broken in: leather sneakers, loafers, low block heels if you must. Brand-new shoes and stilettos are the two mistakes I see most, and both end the same way, in a pharmacy buying blister plasters.

Layers, always. The city sits in a bowl along the Arno: mornings can be 15 degrees cooler than mid-afternoon, and August evenings sometimes turn almost crisp. A light jacket, a silk or cotton scarf, something to tie around your shoulders — that scarf, by the way, also solves problem number three.

Churches have a dress code. Shoulders and knees covered, for everyone, and the Duomo enforces it. A foulard in your bag turns any sundress church-appropriate in ten seconds. This is the single most useful item you can pack for Italy, and the most Florentine.

Summer (June–August): fabric is everything

Florence in July regularly passes 35°C with humidity, and the stone radiates heat back at you. Synthetics are misery; linen, cotton poplin and light silk are survival. Loose shapes beat tight ones — a wide linen dress or trousers with a breathable shirt will keep you cooler than shorts and clingy jersey, and gets you into every church and better restaurant without a second thought.

Skip the flip-flops. Not for style reasons (well, not only): they’re genuinely dangerous on worn stone. A flat leather sandal with a real sole does the same job and looks like you live here.

September and October: the best-dressed months

If you’re coming in September, you’ve chosen well — it’s the month I’d pick for a client’s first trip. Early September is still summer, often 27–28°C in the afternoon, but the light softens and the evenings ask for a layer. By October you want a trench or a light wool jacket, closed shoes, and you can finally wear the leather you bought here.

The formula for both months: summer clothes plus one real layer. A blazer or an unlined leather jacket earns its suitcase space every single day. This is also, not coincidentally, when Florentines look their best — the city’s whole wardrobe philosophy is mid-season.

Winter and spring, briefly

Winter (November–February) is damp cold, usually 5–12°C: wool coat, scarf, waterproof-ish shoes; proper gloves — buy them here, Florence still makes the best leather gloves in Italy. Spring is September in reverse: start with the trench, shed layers as April warms up, and never trust an April morning.

What to skip

Heavy hiking gear (you’re not hiking, and it marks you instantly), more than two pairs of shoes, anything you can’t walk five kilometers in, and the brand-new white sneakers bought for the trip — one day of Florentine dust ages them a decade anyway. Leave room in the suitcase instead: between the leather, the silk and the vintage, Florence is a city you shop in. That’s rather the point of coming.

Dress like you, just walkable

The real secret is that Florentines admire personal style far more than fashion. A simple outfit in good fabric, one accessory with character, shoes that let you move — that reads as elegant here at any age and any budget. It’s the same principle behind my image consulting work: not dressing “right”, but dressing like yourself, deliberately.

If you’d like to put that into practice where it’s most fun, this is literally my job: in our image studio we work on your palette and proportions, and on the My Dream Tour we build outfits from Florentine boutiques and ateliers around your wardrobe, not a mannequin’s. You can find all the tours and style experiences here.

FAQ

What should I wear in Florence in September? Summer clothes with one real layer: light dresses or trousers, breathable fabrics, plus a blazer, trench or leather jacket for evenings. Early September still reaches 27–28°C; by month’s end you’ll use the layer daily.

Is there a dress code in Florence? Only in churches: shoulders and knees covered, enforced at the Duomo and most basilicas. Carry a scarf or foulard and you’re always covered — literally.

Can I wear sneakers in Florence? Absolutely — most locals do. Choose clean, broken-in leather or minimal sneakers rather than athletic running shoes, and your feet and your photos will both thank you.

What shoes are best for Florence’s cobblestones? Broken-in flat or low-heeled shoes with a real sole: leather sneakers, loafers, ankle boots in cooler months. Avoid stilettos and brand-new shoes of any kind.

Dress for Florence and you need to solve exactly three problems: stone streets that punish the wrong shoes, weather that swings hard between seasons (and within a single day), and churches that won’t let you in with bare shoulders or short shorts.
